How to Use the Hydrogen Calculator
This calculator helps you determine the amount of hydrogen stored in a container and the electrical energy it can produce through a fuel cell system.
Instructions:
- Select a preset container type or choose "Custom" for manual entry
- Adjust pressure and temperature as needed (all fields remain editable)
- For custom calculations, enter volume, pressure, and temperature
- Results update automatically as you change values
- Generator recommendations are provided for preset containers
- Warning messages appear if values are outside practical ranges
Technical Details:
- Calculations use the ideal gas law: PV = nRT
- 1 kg of hydrogen contains 33.33 kWh of raw energy (heating value)
- Fuel cell efficiency is approximately 45.5% (electrical output)
- System consumes approximately 0.066 kg of hydrogen per kWh of electricity generated
- Temperature affects hydrogen density (lower temperature = higher density)
- Higher pressure allows more hydrogen storage in the same volume
